Why Every Dr James Formula Contains Diatomaceous Earth

The Ingredient Nobody Expects

Check the label on any of our formulas, whether it's Tissue Mend, Kolonic Kaps, Liv Clean or Nerquilizer, and you'll find one ingredient listed every time: diatomaceous earth.

People ask about it a lot. Isn't that the stuff gardeners use? Why is it in an herbal capsule?

That's a fair question, and the answer has a story behind it.

How It Got Into Every Formula

Years ago, a friend of Dr. Michael E. James started sourcing freshwater, food-grade diatomaceous earth. Dr. James had spent decades in clinical practice working out how herbs nourish the body instead of just covering up symptoms, and he was curious about it right away.

The first plan was to build a single formula around it. But the longer Dr. James looked into it, the more he kept coming back to one idea: everybody needs this. He didn't see it as fitting one formula. He saw it as something that could support every formula.

So that's what we did. Diatomaceous earth has been part of our formulas for more than 30 years. Today it makes up about 5 to 10% of each formula, depending on the blend, and it's in every capsule we make.

A Staple in Our Homes Long Before Our Capsules

DE wasn't new to our family when it went into the formulas. It had been part of everyday life for years.

Veronica, Dr. James's wife, stored wheat and other grains for her family. Every time she filled a bucket, she mixed in diatomaceous earth. It kept bugs out of the grain without chemicals, and the grain was still perfectly good to grind and bake with months later.

Out on the farm, we had a terrible fly problem one summer. So we dusted DE on surfaces all over the place to help keep the bugs under control. The kids, of course, found it and spread it everywhere. It wasn't a worry, though, because it was food grade. It was the same thing we were putting in the grain.

That's the kind of ingredient Dr. James trusted: simple, natural, and something we'd already used in our own homes and around our own kids.

What Diatomaceous Earth Actually Is

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a fine powder made from the fossilized shells of diatoms, which are tiny single-celled algae. Those shells are made mostly of silica, one of the most common minerals on earth.

There are two very different kinds of DE, and the difference matters:

  • Food-grade, freshwater DE is mined from ancient freshwater deposits. It's mostly amorphous (non-crystalline) silica and is meant to be eaten. This is the only kind we use.

  • Filter-grade or pool-grade DE has been heat-treated, which turns much of the silica crystalline. It's made for industrial use and should never be eaten.

So when someone says "isn't that pool filter stuff?", the honest answer is that it comes from the same family of material but it's a completely different product.

Why Dr. James Wanted It in Every Formula

Dr. James had a long list of reasons. These are traditional, clinic-based reasons, not proven medical effects, and we want to be clear about that:

  • Silica for nourishment. Silica is a trace mineral connected with healthy connective tissue, hair, skin and nails. Dr. James saw it as basic nourishment that most diets don't provide enough of.

  • Supporting absorption. He believed DE helped the body make better use of the herbs it was paired with.

  • Gentle cleansing. DE is very absorbent. It absorbs unwanted material and has traditionally been used to support the body's natural cleansing.

  • Traditional parasite cleansing. In folk and herbal practice, food-grade DE has long been used as part of an internal cleanse. Dr. James saw that as one more reason everyone could benefit.

Silica: The Mineral Behind It All

Food-grade DE is mostly silica, and silica is the reason Dr. James valued it most. Your body uses silica to help build collagen, the protein that gives structure to skin, hair, nails, joints and bones.

Research on dietary silica is encouraging. Studies have linked higher silica intake with better bone mineral density, and silicon appears to play a role in forming collagen and connective tissue. Modern diets built on refined foods tend to be low in it. That's one reason Dr. James saw DE as basic nourishment and not a specialty ingredient.

DE and Traditional Parasite Cleansing

Parasite cleansing is one of the most common reasons people look up diatomaceous earth. Under a microscope, food-grade DE particles have sharp, jagged edges. The traditional idea is that these edges damage the outer layer of parasites in the gut, while being harmless to people.

Farmers have used DE for generations in livestock feed and around animals, and many pet owners use it the same way. Dr. James saw that history as one more reason everyone could benefit.

Absorbing Unwanted Material

DE is extremely porous. A small amount can soak up many times its own weight, which is why it's used to filter water and other liquids. Dr. James valued it as a gentle cleanser that absorbs unwanted material as it moves through the digestive tract, supporting the body's natural cleansing.

What Science Says So Far

Here's where we stand. Research on diatomaceous earth in people is still limited. One small study found changes in cholesterol markers, and there's good research on dietary silica and bone and connective tissue health. But claims about DE and parasites or absorption in humans haven't been well studied yet.

We use DE because of Dr. James's clinical experience and decades of traditional use, and we'd rather tell you that directly than oversell it.

What This Means for You

When you take any of our formulas, you're getting three things:

  1. The herbs Dr. James chose for that specific need.

  2. A small amount of food-grade freshwater DE, about 5 to 10% of the blend, for its silica and traditional cleansing support.

  3. A consistent foundation across every formula, so the products work well together when you combine them.

There's nothing extra you need to do. It's already built in.

A few cautions: Breathing in any fine powder, including DE, can irritate your lungs, so if you buy loose DE, handle it carefully. Drink plenty of water with any cleansing-focused product. If you're pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition, talk with your healthcare provider before starting any supplement.

Questions? Just Ask

Diatomaceous earth is one of the quiet foundations of Dr. James's approach: feed the body, support its natural cleansing, and give every herb a strong base to work from.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is diatomaceous earth safe to eat? Food-grade, freshwater diatomaceous earth is generally considered safe to eat in small amounts. Never eat filter-grade or pool-grade DE.

Why is diatomaceous earth in all of Dr James' formula? Dr. Michael James believed everyone could benefit from its silica and its traditional role in supporting cleansing and absorption. So he added it to every formula instead of only one.

How much diatomaceous earth is in each formula? About 5 to 10% of each blend, depending on the formula.

What kind of diatomaceous earth do you use? Only food-grade diatomaceous earth from freshwater deposits.

Does diatomaceous earth kill parasites? Food-grade DE has traditionally been used as part of internal cleansing routines, but human research is limited. We don't claim it treats any condition.

Is diatomaceous earth a good source of silica? Yes. DE is made mostly of silica, a trace mineral connected with healthy connective tissue, hair, skin and nails.
