Herbal Support for a Healthy Heart: Understanding the Cardiovascular System
A man came to see me once, frustrated, convinced his heart was failing him. On the surface his irritation looked like criticism, but I could tell he actually wanted help — and more than that, he was willing to do what I asked. That willingness is everything. I told him I had no magical answers. What I had was a different way of looking at the heart, and a few of God's herbs that have supported it for a very long time.
I want to share that way of looking with you here. Because once you understand what your cardiovascular system actually is and what it's quietly asking of you every day, the idea of supporting it instead of fighting it starts to make a great deal of sense.
What Your Cardiovascular System Really Is

Your cardiovascular system is your heart, your arteries, your capillaries, your veins, your lymphatic system, and your blood. Think of it as the great river system of the body. The heart is the pump. The vessels are the channels. The blood is the water that carries food to every cell and carries waste away. When that river runs clean and strong, the whole countryside flourishes. When it silts up, runs sluggish, or runs under too much pressure, everything downstream begins to suffer.
Here's something most people never hear: the heart muscle would rather burn fat than sugar. When you feed it a steady diet of refined carbohydrates, sodas, sugar, and caffeine, you are handing it the wrong fuel and asking it to work harder for less. That man I mentioned was feeding his heart glucose all day long and wondering why it ached.
The Family History Myth
I hear it constantly: "Dr. James, heart trouble runs in my family. It's just my genes."
There is truth in that — but not the truth most people assume. What runs in a family, far more than any gene, is a way of eating and a way of living. You inherited your family's dinner table. You inherited their habits, their pace, their relationship with sugar and stress. Change those two things — diet and lifestyle — and you may well sidestep the very weaknesses you were told were your destiny. That isn't a promise of a cure. It's an invitation to take back the part of the story that was always yours to write.
The Herbs That Have Long Supported the Heart
I am not here to treat disease with herbs, and I want to be clear about that. What I do is reach for plants that have been used for generations to support, tone, and nourish the cardiovascular system, so the body can do its own good work. Here are the ones I return to again and again.
HRT is my foundational heart-support formula. Hawthorn has traditionally been used to help clean the arteries and veins, to support normal blood pressure, and to tone the heart along with its nerves and muscles. Rosemary has been used to ease the effects of stress on the nervous system and the muscles — and stress, make no mistake, is a cardiovascular issue. Capsicum (cayenne) has long been used to support healthy heart rhythm and circulation. Kelp brings a spread of vitamins, and Lobelia has been used to help relax the muscles and the nervous system. Together they're meant to support a heart that's carrying a heavy load.
Vari Cose speaks to the vessels themselves. Bayberry bark has been used as a tonic for the venous system, Hawthorn to support the strength of the veins and improve circulation, and Cayenne and Oregon grape root to stimulate and tone the circulatory system. When the veins are tired — and varicose veins are tired veins — this is where I look.
Travl is for the moving blood. Ginger is slow to start but has a long, sustained, supportive action on the circulatory system. Cayenne acts fast to support circulation and the body's tolerance of heat and cold. I've found it a comfort for dizziness and for that low, sluggish feeling when circulation isn't reaching where it should.
Blood Wash supports the body's own blood-cleansing process, so that clean blood can nourish and care for the tissues — the foundation that lets every other formula do its job.
Kolonic Kaps belongs in this conversation too, which surprises people. A clean, well-moving bowel takes a real burden off the circulatory system. Traditionally it's been associated with supporting healthy circulation and normal blood pressure, and I rarely build a heart-support plan without considering it.
How I Put Them Together
When someone needs both to relieve and to restore, I don't stagger the formulas — I start them together, on the same day. The body works as one system, and it heals as one system.
For general daily cardiovascular support, HRT is taken according to need — one capsule for mild, building up as the situation calls for it. Vari Cose, when the veins need attention, is taken more generously. Travl supports circulation as needed. Always follow the dosing on PHI's Basic Dosage Guide, start low, and pay attention to how your body responds.
And here is a caution I never skip: do not take any herbal formula at the same time as a chemical medication. Herbs can interfere with the time-release action of pharmaceuticals. Keep them separate — at minimum one hour apart — and if you are on heart or blood-pressure medication, work alongside your doctor. More caution is always better.
A Word on Tea Honey
That frustrated man I started with? I changed his fuel. Off came the refined carbohydrates, the sodas, the coffee, the caffeine. On came honey as his only sweetener, and three eight-ounce glasses of Tea Honey a day. Honey helps the body pull fats into the bloodstream so the heart can burn the fuel it actually prefers. He didn't need to ration it — the body's own gag reflex sets the limit. Paired with HRT to support and tone the heart muscle, he had every tool he needed. The rest was his willingness.
Where to Begin
Start with the river, not the pump. Clean up what you're putting in. Cut the sugar and the caffeine, lean on honey, drink your water, and move your body — even a few minutes of rebounding a day is a wonderful support to circulation. Then add the herbs that have supported hearts for generations: HRT first, with Vari Cose, Travl, Blood Wash, and Kolonic Kaps as your needs direct.
Your heart has been faithful to you every second of your life. Supporting it is the most natural form of gratitude I know.
